GULF114 Olmos - Luna's Groove 12" Vinyl/Digital

Image
Olmos (real name Oliver Graham) has been one of the busiest influencers on Australia’s underground music culture this side of the 90s. Through family-run operation Paradise Loft Records, he has quietly imported tens of thousands of dead stock Disco, Boogie and early House records into crates across the country - affording tastemakers a slice of music culture only a trip to NYC would previously have allowed. Thus Ol’s arrival at Gulf Point gleams with the jewels you’d expect from a producer with such inspired tastes. These are set free on “Luna’s Groove”, a star-chasing collection of slick, nouveau post-disco works, crafted in earnest with dancers in mind. Raised on a healthy diet of Levan mixes and M+M dubs, his own use of juicy Moog basslines, progressive arrangements and glittering melodies form an EP that modestly harnesses the New York Garage aesthetic he loves so dearly. Three Olmos originals are teamed with an astral mix by Benny Badge, reigniting his Freekwency namesake to re-wo...

GULF113 Silver Linings - Don't Make Tracks LP 12" Vinyl/Digital

Image
It has been a year of rapid growth for neo-Boogie front runners Silver Linings. Following their triumphant debut LP (and literal expansion from duo to trio) band members Françoise D’Argent, Benny Badge and Lachlan Peavey have wasted no time, dazzling new audiences on their recent tour of Europe/UK and mixing it with the cream of Australia’s crop at Inner Varnika 2017. Forward-facing and free, “Don’t Make Tracks“ clocks them at new altitudes with a sound as classic as it is cutting-edge. For many, “So Good To You” was a bolt from the blue, 2016’s answer to a brand of romantic R&B owned by Loose Ends in the 80s and Flyte Tyme in the 90s: sorely-missed and rarely done right since. For Boogie heads it was a fresh treat from a reliable source (producer Benny Badge being a seasoned supplier to the renaissance) whilst Melbourne locals dubbed it a ’scene record’, part of a small and affectionately named catalogue highlighting notable collaborations.  Fast forward one year and “Don’t Ma...

GULF112 Alexey Lanvin - One Look EP Cassette/Digital

Image
Gulf Point's expanding roster delivers a twist with the introduction of Vienna-based Alexey Lanvin. Men's fashion connoisseur by day, "One Look" diarises Alexey's private persona as he broods over the octaves with acutely romantic flair. His series of short online videos hint at a realm where long stares, midnight moods and South Beach style are everyday fare - a vision fellow pastel chief and label boss Benny Badge simply couldn't ignore. "One Look" opens this window to Lanvin's electrifying world even further, his talking keyboards ready as ever to converse. Alexey gets straight to the point, launching into two searing ballads full of silky Rhodes and evocative textures. While an ominous inner-city funk adorns all songs, it's 'definitely Miami' when the upbeat items arrive (both "Good Love" and "Lips" could score one of Crockett's fleeting love scenes in easy fashion) - suggesting his High Street antics are m...

GULF109 Au Dré - Wanna Know b/w Wonder 7" Vinyl/Digital

Image
Melbourne band-scene heavies Au Dré (Audrey Powne & James Bowers) blast onto the gulf with their debut vinyl release in sync with Record Store Day. Late in 2016 they launched a self-titled, self-released CD that smashed the barriers of both time and taste with a boogie-fuelled, synth-pop jaunt through decidedly jazzy landscapes. Peppered with sultry stories and New Jack Swing-uendo (if that wasn't a thing, it now is) the EP hit local airwaves hard, the single 'Wanna Know" catching the attention of label boss Benny Badge who signed it on sight and joins Audrey on secondary cover track "Wonder". Long out of print and highly desirable, so be quick if you see one in the wild. Digital:  Juno Download   7" Vinyl:  Discogs

GULF108 Silver Linings - So Good To You LP 12" Vinyl/Digital

Image
Fronted by Melbourne’s Françoise d’Argent and Benny Badge, “So Good To You” showcases an evolution for Silver Linings and the duo’s signature Soul-Boogie sound. Following their debut on Gulf Point with 2014’s “Sleepless”, Benny made the sketches for “So Good To You” during an extended pit stop in Manchester. From here he returned with a sound palette affected heavily by the rainy city’s disposition for synthetically fused Jazz and electronic music. Bolstered with session work by fellow Melbourne musicians Harvey Sutherland (Keyboards, Drum Programming), Silentjay (Saxophone), Lachlan Peavey (Bass) and more, these drafts became an intricate production that would see elements of Soul, Fusion and Electro layered with classic R&B arrangements and 80s production etiquette. Describing the result of this unique ensemble can only be done by looking at its highlights. Moments such as “Start It Over” and the brooding “34th Floor” are an ode to UK Electro-Jazz; there’s the Sade-esque “Waiting...

GULF103 Freekwency feat. Sarah Bates - Do What's On Ya Mind 7" Vinyl/Digital

Image
Another notch in it's private press endeavours, Gulf Point's third release is a street soul record in every sense. Benny Badge re-laces his boots as the drum machine romantic FREEKWENCY, this time joined by busy Mancunians Sarah Bates on vocals and session sax player Chris Nelson (whom they met busking in the city's renowned Northern Quarter) bringing their own fire to the single. GULF102 Silver Linings - Sleepless 12" Vinyl/Digital

Image
Beginning as a studio collaboration between vocalists Francoise and producer Benny Badge, "Sleepless" introduces us to the sound of Silver Linings: jazzy modern boogie at it's finest. Combining the vibe of 80s Soul with sugar-sweet vocals and melodies, this mid-tempo stepper will be right at home with fans of Brit-Funk legends Paul Hardcastle, Total Contrast and others. Backing this is "Chemical Attraction", a brooding electro funk instrumental laden with driving synthscapes and a hard hitting TR-707 drum track. The heavier of the two cuts, this synthetic love affair reminds of the best from classic UK dance labels such as Streetwave and London Records. Digital:  Juno Download   12" Vinyl:  Discogs

GULF101 Nite Class - Love Scenes (Deluxe Edition) CD/Digital

Image
Nite Class is truly a labour of love. Hailing from the same hotbed as his Freekwency works, Benny Badge's debut alongside vocal enchanters Drew Konichiwa and Penelope Shum gives greatly to lovers of modern soul and funk music. Pleasantly reminiscent of Boo gie's early 80s heyday—with significant endorsement from genre tastemakers Dâm-Funk and PPU (People's Potential Unlimited) —this deluxe edition was exclusively distributed by Diskunion Japan and includes instrumentals and additional band photos.
